Friday is traditionally a day of prayer in Egypt, but since the January revolution, it has also been a day of protest.
Now a group of IT workers have come together to convince their fellow citizens to work on Fridays and help boost an economy which shrank by an estimated seven percent in the first quarter of this year.
Employees with US technology firm Oracle are among those taking part.
The idea, suggested by activists via a Facebook group, has been taken up by the IT industry development agency, an offshoot of the ministry of communications.
The turmoil that eventually led to the ousting of former president, Hosni Mubarak, has dented revenues in key sectors such as tourism.
Egypt’s budget deficit is expected to reach 11 percent by the end of next year and talks with the IMF are expected to be concluded on Sunday over a 2-billion-euro bridge loan.
