Shifts in global outsourcing sees Egypt break into top 10 offshoring destinations

People and skills availability, financial attractiveness and business environment establish Egypt as world’s 6th most attractive offshoring location

Cairo, 20 May 2009: Egypt has emerged as the 6th most attractive offshoring destination according to the 2009 A.T. Kearney Global Services Location Index™ entering the top 10 for the first time.

The report analyzes and ranks countries for locating outsourcing activities including IT services, contact centers and back office support. It measures against three categories – financial attractiveness, people and skills availability and business environment.

Egypt, having ranked 13th in 2007, is fast becoming one of the world’s hottest offshoring destinations and has established itself as the leading Middle East and North Africa location. The report cited the competitive cost and the availability of qualified people on top of Egypt’s biggest attractions.

A recent report by the Commonwealth Business Council and CyberMedia also highlights Egypt’s continued progress and capabilities, ranking it the number one outsourcing destination in Africa. The study which outlined the outsourcing readiness of 15 African nations, clearly expressed that infrastructure, people and skills played a key role in the offering, with Egypt ranking highly in these areas, and topping the list overall.

Commenting on the findings of the recent A.T. Kearney report, Dr. Hazem Abdelazim, CEO of Egypt’s Information Technology Development Industry Agency (ITIDA) said: “We are seeing a continued shift in the global outsourcing landscape. Companies looking to outsource are looking not only at the cost benefits, but also at the skills and availability of talent and the overall business environment. Egypt is continuing to push forward in developing its large talent pool and in providing a safe, modern business environment.”

The ever-growing list of multinationals investing in Egypt including Vodafone,

Teleperformance, IBM, Microsoft, SQS, Stream Global Services, and Valeo is another testament to the country’s unwavering efforts to establish itself as a leading global outsourcing destination.

Latest Global Services-Tholons Study puts Egypt in 7th position, up four places on its 2007 ranking

Cairo, 9 October, 2008: Egypt’s capital, Cairo, has broken in to the top ten of the world’s emerging outsourcing cities for the first time, according to the latest Global Services-Tholons Study, moving up four positions in the last year. This is a huge step forward for Egypt which has not only risen to 7th position in the overall ranks, but is also the only country from the Middle East and North Africa region in this year’s listings.

Egypt is fast becoming one of the world’s most attractive locations for global outsourcing, with its large, multi-lingual talent pools, its high percentage of IT and technical related university graduates, its robust infrastructure and low costs, all contributing to its position in the top ten of emerging outsourcing hotspots.

Commenting on Egypt’s rise in the rankings, Dr Hazem Abdelazim, CEO,
Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) said: “This is a great step forward for Egypt. Over the years we have been working hard to strengthen our ICT sector and promote Egypt as a leader in the global outsourcing industry. This latest study highlights the potential Egypt has and the developments we have made. This is also reflected in our ongoing expansion plans and the increased investment we are seeing from major international organizations.”

Global Services-Tholons Study combines results from surveys and interviews with key providers, to identify which global cities are set to be the next hotspots for the outsourcing industry. It looks at a wide range of criteria, including scale and quality of workforce, education, cost, infrastructure, risk profile and quality of life.

Of all the cities reaching the top 50 in the report, Egypt is the only country to boast Arabic language skills alongside a broad range of European languages. It also benefits from the presence of many leading global service providers named within the report including HP, IBM, Wipro and Satyam. IBM recently extended its commitment to Egypt, signing a three year partnership that will see it establish a nanotechnology research center, develop a services science university curriculum and launch a Global Service Delivery Center based in Egypt.

These strengths, combined with improved ranking in the report, highlight the progress Egypt has made in building a leading outsourcing location. Additionally, according to recent Yankee Group report it has the strongest position in the MENA region based on its young population, sustainable and abundant talent pool of technologically skilled and multi-lingual university graduates.

With government support through Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and ITIDA , Egypt has built an entire network to support the growth and development of the country’s ICT industry. The availability of a qualified multilingual workforce, excellent infrastructure and political stability combined with the development of technology and contact center parks in Alexandria and Cairo have all helped attract companies to invest in Egypt.
