ITIDA: Egypt plans for rapid IT growth - Egypt Business Directory: News

ITIDA: Egypt plans for rapid IT growth - Egypt Business Directory: News

ITIDA is back at GITEX TECHNOLOGY WEEK, with an ambitious post-revolution ambition for the country’s ICT sector.
Yasser El Kady, Chief Executive Officer, ITIDA, says that the agency, which was formed in 2005 to promote Egypt’s growing IT sector, has a renewed focus, and new aspirational targets for growth.

“We are more aggressive, we are focusing on aspirational growth, and I think we are going in the right direction,” he says.

ITIDA has a wide ranging remit to support Egypt’s ICT sector, particularly in the areas of outsourcing and offshoring, and in software development. The agency has brought 80 companies to GITEX this year, including companies in systems integration and hardware assembly, to promote the sector and give the message that Egypt is definitely still ‘on’ for business.

The agency has set aggressive new targets for growth, including developing the outsourcing/offshoring industry in Egypt, which currently provides 60,000 jobs and accounts for $1.3 billion in business, to become a $7 billion business by 2016, and trebling software export over the next three years.

El Kady says that during the unrest earlier in the year, ITIDA proactively worked with the ICT sector, with multinational customers and clients, to reassure and support them. The agency also carried out outreach activities, including visiting major outsourcing clients in the US.

“During the revolution, ITIDA did a great job in communicating with the multinationals, supporting them, helping them. People were very appreciative that a government entity was doing this, and it was the starting point of building a trusting relationship with them,” he says.

The ICT sector in Egypt is now thriving, El Kady says, with a deal with a major multinational outsourcer, that will create 20,000 jobs in the country, due soon, and with several companies looking at acquisitions of Egyptian companies.

ITIDA is also working with 100 companies in the country, focused on verticals and Arabic language software and content.

Egypt among breakaway 'big 3' for global outsourcing leadership | ITIDA | AMEinfo.com

Egypt among breakaway 'big 3' for global outsourcing leadership | ITIDA | AMEinfo.com

Egypt today reinforced its position as one of the breakaway 'big 3' leading outsourcing destinations worldwide, according to independent research revealed at Gitex Technology Week by Egypt's Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and YouGov Siraj.

The research shows a gulf emerging between the dominant status of leaders Egypt (51%), India (85%) and China (62%) - compared to Russia (18%), Brazil (9%), and Ukraine (4%) - with professional client service teams and business understanding identified as key to the outsourcing decision for three-quarters (76%) of respondents.

Decision makers in the GCC region recognized that Egypt has made important in-roads as a global hub over the last 12 months, with 37% confirming that they would consider the country as their destination of choice for outsourcing, compared to 31% in 2009. Business managers that already outsource to Egypt, or would consider doing so, list the availability of Arabic language capabilities, a strong business acumen and professional client service teams as the top three qualities influencing their selection.

Commenting on the results from Gitex Technology Week, Dr. Hazem Abdelazim, CEO of ITIDA, said, "This research carries reassuring news for Egypt, as it continues on a long term journey to enhance its global
competitiveness in the IT sector. These strides aren't taken overnight, but we see from this research that we are amongst good company in building the right environment for a world-leading outsourcing hub that is
successful in attracting inward investment to the country."

When selecting a destination for outsourcing, Mena's decision makers remain clear and consistent on their priorities over the last 12 months. Professionalism continues to be important or very important for 97% of
respondents, with successful outsourcing destinations demonstrating an understanding of the company's organization. At the same time, comparison with 2009 data shows that companies are watching their spending more closely than ever, with 95% citing competitive costs as similarly key. Access to a qualified and skilled talent pool (91%) and a well established and reliable infrastructure, telecommunications and internet access (90%) also lead the list of influencing factors.

"Cost continues to be a competitive factor, but there is more to the decision than this alone," continued Dr. Hazem Abdelazim. "The key to success - as reinforced by these findings - is the construction of a sustainable and professional environment for growth that inspires stability and longevity in business partnerships. Egypt has long recognized this importance and ITIDA is a prime example of an organization dedicated to promoting, developing and growing Egypt's information and communications technology industry with a particular focus on fostering a leading outsourcing destination."

Egypt’s IT Industry Development Agency leads the country’s biggest delegation to GITEX

One of the world’s fastest growing IT outsourcing hotspots is out to impress GITEX 2008

Cairo, Egypt – September 27, 2008: Egypt’s IT industry development agency, is leading the country’s largest delegation of 27 Egyptian IT companies to exhibit at GITEX Dubai 2008, the Middle East’s largest technology exhibition from Oct. 19 – 23, 2008.

The size of the delegation highlights the strength of the country’s ICT ecosystem which has been pinpointed in recent analyst reports as the world’s fastest rising IT outsourcing hotspot.

The Yankee Group in its report titled “Can Middle Eastern countries fulfill the ‘Eastern’ promise?” published in July 2008 concluded: “Egypt is by far the Middle Eastern country currently best positioned to take advantage of the boom in outsourcing.” The report also identified Dubai as facing “major challenges in convincing enterprises and IT service providers that it is a smart shore location.”

With its relatively young population, a multilingual workforce, and a large and burgeoning talent pool of IT professionals, the Egyptian outsourcing sector has received strong government support. It is projected that the Egyptian outsourcing sector will generate revenue of more than $1 billion by 2010, four times the 2005 revenue.

The World Bank in its annual “Doing Business” report has also recognized the Egyptian reforms. The country has topped the list of global reformers that are making it easier to do business in two out of the last three years and continues to be the leading regional reformer.

“Egypt has built an entire ecosystem to support the country’s ICT industry and pave the way for the growth in outsourcing,” said Dr Hazem Abdelazim, CEO, ITIDA. “The availability of a qualified multilingual workforce, excellent infrastructure and political stability - coupled with the development of our Smart Village technology park in Cairo and planned future technology and contact centre parks in Alexandria and Cairo - have all helped attract companies to invest in Egypt.”

The latest multinational to embrace Egypt is Teleperformance, one of the world’s leading providers of outsourced CRM and contact centre services, which has set up a new contact centrer in Cairo that will be home to over 2,500 workstations. IBM has just inked a deal with the Egyptian government to set up a Nano-technology research center in Cairo and pledged its support to a number of training and educational initiatives that will cement cooperation between the country and the leading company.

Other companies using Egypt as a base for their software development and technical support contact centers as well as research facilities include SQS, Valeo, Wipro, Satyam, Intel, Microsoft, Cisco and Oracle. The move by such high-profile companies highlights how fast Egypt is becoming the desired location for setting up business process outsourcing and knowledge process outsourcing centres.
